A Thanksgiving Note

I grew up in Southern Illinois. I was one of five children. We all worked within the family business of buying, showing and selling the 400 plus horses owned by Mom and Dad.

Our parents worked hard. Dad especially was not one to take time off. But on Thanksgiving and Christmas, he would stop long enough to have Mom’s scrumptious turkey dinner with family and friends.

Thanksgiving was … and still is … a special day to me because we stop our busy lives to be with each other, enjoy delicious food, eat too much and reflect on our blessings.

Gratitude as a daily practice beyond Thanksgiving always takes us to a more positive place within during good times and during struggles. We begin to see more naturally, the positives in our lives instead of focusing on what’s missing.

Today, I want you to know how grateful I am for you being a part of my life. Truly, I am grateful. You allow me to share my thoughts as I learn from you, too.

I wish you a beautiful day with family and friends … full of gratitude for the many, many blessings in your life.

Happy Thanksgiving,

  4. Thanks. I needed the reminder to be grateful. I can’t remember any of my childhood Thanksgivings and I’m alone this year (again. My daughter goes to her father and boyfriend and I have no other family except for my collie and my 2 horses. So I’ll get to see the horses and clean up dafter them today anyway. Wish I were a positive person like you but at 75 I’m tired of trying.

  6. I am so grateful to have your thoughts arrive in my email box. I don’t always respond to them, but I read them and realize how grateful I am to be able to ride and enjoy life–and the view–from the back of a horse, Happy Thanksgiving from my house to yours. And thank you again.

  14. Thank you, Barbra, for the good thoughts today and all the other ways in which you reach out and touch so many lives. I am in the later chapter of my life and I miss the family members of my earlier years, especially around holiday times. I am grateful for the many good memories and warm thoughts of those who are no longer with me. Grateful for my sons, my daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Grateful for the wonderful area where I live, and in spite of the medical merry-go-round of this chapter of our lives, my husband and I have been blessed with the best of the best of medical care. Thank you for the good thoughts and making me pause to think of all I have to be grateful for. Blessings to you and yours. I am sending a hug and good wishes across the miles.

  32. Thank you Barbra for reminding me of everything I have and the gratefulness I feel every morning when I write my gratefuls down in my journal. It has been such an inspiring journey with you and the wonderful people I have met along the way in the group. Have a wonderful Thanks Giving with your family – whilst we don’t celebrate here in Australia – it is a great reminder to be thankful. Blessings to you.

  34. Your photo on the posting, I believe is the view from your back patio. So now I see where you were enjoying the glass of wine while the dinner was burning in the microwave for how long? 30 minutes? Loved hearing the tale and witnessing the love between you and Tom.
I am ever so grateful to God for allowing me to be born to loving parents, in a land of freedom, and enjoy a purposeful life. You have enriched my life even further.

  40. Sorry to bother you. I am from southern Illinois and I am a big fan of your fathers. I never got to meet him but heard a lot of stories about him. I have been to his old place a few times when larry morse had it after your dad. They are about to tear it all down and it is heartbreaking.i was wondering if anyone ever thought of writing a book about him? I think it would be a great one! thank you. Scott

  42. Hi, Scott,

You are NOT bothering me. I love hearing from you. You know what … I have been asked multiple times about writing about Dad and our family. I will one of these days. Thank you for the encouragement. Barb
