Why I’m grateful

This week is Thanksgiving, which has always been one of my favorite holidays.

I want you to know how grateful I am for you. I have three big reasons why.

That’s what this video is all about.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

This week is Thanksgiving, which has always been one of my favorite holidays.

In our family, with 400 plus horses… and constant work to be done… it was one of two days of the year when my Dad paused and centered his day around eating turkey dinner with family and friends.

All was well in the world on Thanksgiving. We were all together, filling our bellies and bemoaning eating too much.

And while I always knew as a kid that Thanksgiving was about gratitude, I don’t recall that it meant that much to me back then. It was more about taking time out, resting, and feeling warm and fuzzy at home.

But now, it seems that every year, I’m more aware than ever that Thanksgiving is a great reminder of all of the good things, wonderful people and dear horses in our lives… and it’s the time to truly celebrate them.

I think it’s especially important this year because 2020 has been such a tough one! And that’s for many reasons. Some of those reasons impact us all, like COVID… and some are so very personal as to how they played out in our lives.

But I believe that as difficult as uncertainty is… and 2020 has been full of it… therein lies some of our greatest blessings if we choose to see it that way.

And seeing the blessings in our struggles can begin so simply by becoming aware of what we are grateful for.

So, with that in mind, I want you to know how grateful I am for you.

Here are my reasons why.

Your interest in the different topics and ideas we explore here allows me to share my passion for the human spirit… and also how our horses so help us learn… and love… and have fun.

I am one of the luckiest people ever to enjoy you and this big, wonderful family where we all share our common addiction for the horse… for growing as riders… and becoming more as people.

And here’s another awesome reason why I’m grateful for you.

It’s because of all of that I learn from you.

I receive many notes and emails about perspectives, books, or ideas that I never knew before. I think, “Wow, that’s pretty awesome!” and so I keep learning.

Also, because of your questions, sometimes I have to keep digging and researching and understanding to answer them!
The bottom line is, I keep learning!

And last but not least, I am grateful for you because with all of us together we have a wonderful community of positivity and horse people.

The energy here makes me happy and continues to nourish me. Because of that, I feel a connection with you. We all yearn to feel connected with each other and our horses. I feel that with you.

So, in this Thanksgiving time, I toast you and feel incredibly grateful for you.

Leave a comment about what you’re grateful for in your horse world… or in your life.

No matter how tough things get, gratitude will always lift us up.

Have a great week, and stay safe. Happy Thanksgiving.

  14. I am grateful for so many things! I am grateful for your lessons and videos. I am grateful for Marc, my partner of 24 years, my dog, chickens, quail, rabbits, pigeons, and most of all for my large pony, who after 11 years of super reactive has finally started to settle down this year, and learning to think first, before spinning and bolting! I am grateful for family, though I won’t get to see them this year. We are all healthy and safe.

  20. Like others here, im grateful for and to you, for your kindness, gentleness and positivity. These attributes have been missing, physically and emotionally as both covid and politics have divided and separated us across our country. I am grateful for the family that remains with us, and for those that have passed, because we’re still making memories and carrying past memories and tradition forward. We’re able to give more in support of others who have less, in time and resources. Our little ranch and critters keep us grounded to nature and soulful work that keeps us moving. It’s a lot to be thankful for and reflect on, but love has always been our foundation, across all times, those dimmer ones to good, to better, to our time left. Wishing you continued love and kindness in return. Happy Trails and remember … eat pie!

  24. Grateful for you being “my people”. Learning how to take those deep Barb breaths before looking a cow in the eye. Our love of Audrey, Laura, Shannon and all the great women in our lives. And always always looking for the next great idea together. Love you and Flipper!

  26. Years ago (around 15) a wise friend gave me your book and I enjoyed reading it as far as I could..but I’m kind of a slow learner so I wasn’t getting the full benefit of your unique approach until recently. COVID actually forced me to re-visit the gems sitting neglected on my own bookshelves. Also, I’d never heard of Warwick Schiller until your interview and I was impressed by your respect and delight in the interaction. That discussion made a huge impact on me as that very day I had had a particularly unnerving interaction with my beautiful horse just by having been habitually unaware of all those little things he was talking about. I’d never heard of Brene Brown either, and talk about another eye-opener! I feel things opening up all around me exactly when it looked like they were closing down…So yes THANKS I am very very grateful for all your work!

  28. Thanks to you, Barb, I have been keeping a gratitude journal since February 2017! There is SO much to be thankful for, not just the big things like being able to live on this wonderful farm with my horses, but also I am more aware of the little things like the beauty of t he first dandelion to bloom in the spring! You have made me more aware of LIFE and I am SO grateful for that!

  30. I’m grateful for all my family and friends. I’m so grateful for you and your way of looking at our horses. As you know from any energy work that when you are open and allowing good things will come your way and at just the right time. I had to put down my sweet boy in April and you showed up shortly thereafter as I had begun the difficult process of looking for another horse. I found her and brought her home in July. It hasn’t been an easy transition with fires, and quarantine. Your help with planning and being grounded, positive and realizing that I have plenty of time has really helped. Loved listening to Warwick today as he really struck a cord about really seeing my very sensitive girl! I thank you for coming into my life at just the right time. As we know there are no coincidences!

  34. Hi Barb, Thank you for your “Thanksgiving Message of Gratitude”, and even encouraging us to find the positive things from this difficult year of 2020–often there is growth during difficult times. I am thankful for your input into our horse lives in your many ways–the Sunday video which I look forward to, and your seminars that can be life changing, not just with horses but everyday life. Like many others, I do feel very blessed to have my 4 horses in my life, and of course my supportive husband, and my three sons, two of which have children, thus we have three grandchildren :). I’m deeply thankful that I have an ever growing relationship with God, and His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit who teaches me from God’s word. I”m blessed every day and it’s good to be writing this down. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!!!! 🙂

  38. Because of Covid, I had a mandatory pause from work and my usual cow working venue, so I started taking cutting lessons (something I always dreamed of doing). Roy Rich had me purchase your book, and that plus watching your videos helped greatly in handling my stress during herd work competition and keeping the focus on my horse. Thankful for that and your continual outlook on our horses being a blessing. I’m also grateful to the person who allowed me to purchase her well-trained cutting horse at an affordable price. That’s the only reason I had the opportunity.

  46. I am grateful for my health, living in a rural area where I can still ride, but keep socially distanced from people, but not cows. I am grateful for this amazing course which has helped me get on another level with my horse. Listening to Warwick Schiller was eye opening in noticing the little things. Thank you Barb.

  50. Barb, I am grateful for your wisdom, friendship, support, and humor! I am grateful for my really cool horse that is so much fun – and has so much “cow”. I am also grateful for my trainer who is so supportive, knowledgeable, and is appreciative and cognizant of the challenges I have in changing disciplines from eventing and jumping for many years to cow work, as well as limitations of the “bionic arm”. The camaraderie of like-minded and positive cowgirls and other horsewomen is a gift. It is such fun to be on this journey with all of you.

  52. Thank you Barbra for sharing your thoughts on Thanksgiving with our community and for reminding us to focus in on what we are greatful for. I am greatful to you for creating this community and for sharing your thoughts and ideas about how we can become better horse people, together. I am also thankful for my horse. He lifts me up regardless of how I am feeling and also connects me to a local of community of people who share my “addiction” for horsemanship and riding. Most of all, I am thankful for my health and my ability to get out and be active with my horse and with friends. Happy Thanksgiving to you!
