Hello, my beautiful friends.
Oh my gosh. It is the most magnificently sunny, balmy winter day. And perhaps where you are, too, the weather is improving.
Being on my boy and taking a little ride feels so great.
So I just have something to talk to you about today that is one of my favorite topics, and that is when we feel undone a bit when it seems like things are ‘coming at us’ – when we get very focused on the outside world.
For example, like results at a show or riding in front of others,
I don’t know if you can relate to this, but as things ‘come’ at me, (at least that’s how I process it at the moment), I can allow it to affect me.
I’m sharing two questions that have guided my life in these situations.
The goal is to return to being more within ourselves and not bouncing off externals.
The first question is, what do I have control over?
Regarding other people, the weather, the judge, and even our instructor, we don’t have control over those things or people, but we do have control over our responses.
Responses fall into two categories. One is to let it go, like the weather, and figure out how to deal with it.
The other is that sometimes situations can bubble up in our environments, lives, and businesses. We don’t control the bubble-up, but we can control our next step—how we respond.
The other question is, what’s my job?
This brings us back to the present moment, too.
With our horses, our job is some variation of the theme of us staying very grounded and in the parasympathetic nervous system state. Self-awareness always comes first, but then comes back to this moment.
And what is my job?
Our job with our horses is to stay grounded. We state our goals as clearly as possible. Then, we prepare ourselves and our horses by warming up and practicing.
So that’s what I have for you in several ways this past week.
People I know, friends, family, and others, felt that things were coming at them, and they were having difficulty focusing and deciding on their responses. I love those two questions because they’re straightforward, easy to answer, and bring you back to the moment and within yourself.
Okay, have a lovely week. That’s what I have. Bye bye.
