Don’t Forget to Ask

Hey, it’s Barb, and I have just a little mini podcast for you today. And that’s because I was reminded of something today that Steve Jobs said. Steve is the founder of Apple, who passed away from pancreatic cancer. But this one particular idea is an excellent piece of wisdom from him.

Here’s the essence of it.

Ask for what you want.

And that sounds so simple, but when I hear that for myself, it’s like, well, yeah. But then I can feel myself step back and think of all the times I hesitated to ask someone I admired – either afraid they would turn me down or worried they would think I should already know that.

Those kinds of fears are always about fear of being judged.

In the horse world, amateurs and non pros sometimes don’t ask for specific things because they’re worried they’ll appear inadequate. Or they think that trainers and other mentors are the final word and they shouldn’t have an opinion.

Asking for what we want is such a wise and straightforward idea.

It requires the clarity to know what we want and the courage to ask for it.

And as I was thinking about it, I thought, “You know what? The worst thing that can happen is that we’re told ‘no.'”

Or even if we do get an odd attitude (which 99% of the time we would not), we can choose not to allow someone else’s perspective to impact us negatively.

If you want something (either you want to know something, or you want to ask to ride in a particular situation, etc.), ask and never assume you know the answer to your ask.

And then this came to me, and this is personal.

One of the most powerful things we can do is ask in our prayers and visualizations.

So that’s what I have for you today.

I hope this short little message inspires you to do that one thing that’s so powerful through your prayers, meditations, visualizations, thoughts, and words with others.

Ask for what you want and see where the adventure leads you.

Please feel free to leave a comment for me. Bye-bye.

  4. So very true Barb. “Ask and we’ll receive, seek and we’ll find “. Works in all our endeavors, especially in our horse world.

  8. I know that many times I am afraid to ask because I have made up a story about how someone will react, even before I’ve given them a chance!

And if we never ask, we won’t know! So YES, I love this mini podcast!

  10. As I sit in my chair here in the field watching my horse eat her green grass. Along with the dog an 2 cats by my side. Reading scripture in Exodus. I was noticing how specific God is in his direction . I wrote down I will be too. An started asking Him things. I took a break an found your podcast. It was my confirmation. I forget to ask. An I will with specific thought of my need. Thanks Barb. Blessings

  12. Thank you Barb🙏 The simplicity of this is perfect and a good reminder to be clear with people as well as with horses! I think many of us operate in a grey zone with people on a daily basis ( real or perceived survival/navigation pattern) which makes it more of a challenge when trying to be clear with horses or with ourselves🙏💜🐴

  16. Thank you for sharing and reminding us! I have learned to have confidence in what I DO know about my horse and to ask for the information to help him execute something if he is struggling. As I result, I learned how to find the “thing” he was struggling with and find a way to help him get some clarity and confidence in what was being asked. Looking forward to what the current “adventure” has in store for us. Getting my horse prepared for it but not “directing” the path. The opportunites are presenting themselves.
