The NCHA Futurity Champions Cup

Each month I typically write a cutting article that shares specific cutting tips.

However, during this past Futurity in Fort Worth, I attended the best cutting event of my lifetime.

The NCHA celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Futurity by inviting all living Open Champions to compete in a cutting in Will Rogers Coliseum.

The draw began with the 2010 champion rider, Lloyd Cox and ended with the first Futurity Champion rider, Buster Welch.

“How to “Unbend” a Horse and Walk Straight”

No Stupid Question, Right?

Recently I received an email that said, “Barb, there’s no stupid question, right???”

I said, “If my husband comes in and says, ‘Honey, would you like for me to make dinner for you? … I say, that’s a stupid question!”

In the horse world, all questions are good ones!

The specific concern was how to straighten “the bend” of a horse if his body is bent to right and the rider wants his body to be straight. Specifically, the question was about which leg to use.

Get a Boost From the Past and Plan Your Move Forward

Sometimes it feels like progress crawls at a snail’s pace. It’s easy to think about all the things you still can’t do very well.

Sometimes it just takes a marker in time to realize how far you really have come.

Where were you in your riding at this same time last year?

Consider the increase in your overall knowledge, the quality of your practice sessions, your improved mental skills, your level of enjoyment, and your showing. Don’t forget to include the joy you felt with your horse and comradery with friends.
